Who needs recess when you’ve got a bigger mission?

At Eagle Bay Elementary, many of the sixth graders are trading playground time for yarn and looms to help those in need.

It all started when Sixth-grade teacher and part-time knitting guru Jason Anderson was crafting hats for the non-profit Una Obra De Amor, which supports communities in Ecuador. Seeing their teacher’s passion, the students decided to jump in and give it a try. Fast forward a few weeks, and three dozen kids have not only picked up a new skill but CRUSHED their goal of 80 handmade winter hats which will all be donated to a senior center impacted by power outages.

And get this: no one even asked them to do it. This act of kindness was 100% their idea.

“I'm very proud of these students… They’ve taken the lead on this whole process, and it’s been amazing to watch,” Anderson said.

With more knitters comes more problems. There wasn’t enough yarn to complete the project. A big shoutout to the school and teaching community for donating over $600 in yarn and looms to make this dream a reality.

The students say knitting is easy to learn and makes them feel good knowing their creations are helping others. Thanks for skipping recess.
