Millcreek Junior High is celebrating a national recognition that highlights the strength of its school community and its commitment to student success. The school recently received the PTA National School of Excellence designation, a two-year recognition honoring PTAs and schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to family-school partnerships and student success.
The recognition came after Millcreek surveyed families to better understand their experiences and identify opportunities to strengthen communication and involvement. A team of parents, teachers and administrators then worked together to turn that feedback into action.
The school launched a monthly newsletter, updated its website, expanded its social media presence and created new ways for families to receive important information. Communications were also translated into Spanish to help more families feel welcomed and included.
Students have played an important role in that work, too. For the first time, three students representing student leadership groups joined the PTSA board, giving students a direct voice in conversations and decisions that affect their school community.
The changes have created more opportunities for families and students to participate. Millcreek reported a more than 300% increase in PTA membership last year, along with more than 800 volunteer hours.
The PTA National School of Excellence program recognizes schools and PTAs that intentionally build strong family-school partnerships. Family engagement can also support school improvement and student achievement by creating stronger connections between families and their schools.
During the recognition ceremony, Utah PTA President Julie Bluff highlighted Millcreek's work to listen to families, create opportunities for involvement and make sure students have a voice in their school community.
The PTA National School of Excellence designation reflects the work of students, families, educators, administrators and community members who continue to build a welcoming school community where everyone has a place at the table.
