Davis School District Employees Give Blood
You often hear summer described as “the lazy days,” though many would argue the opposite is true. With vacations, family activities, and countless other responsibilities, the season can pass by as quickly as a Utah monsoon. Amid all this bustle, blood donation rates tend to drop significantly.
This summer, the Red Cross of Utah saw their blood supply reach uncomfortably low levels. In August, they issued an urgent appeal for blood donations, urging those who were able to donate blood and platelets.
“Blood donations help those with cancer who need transfusions,” said Michael Smauldon, Executive Director of the Red Cross in Northern Utah. “We work with hospitals to ensure they have what they need for emergencies such as car accidents, birth complications, and emergency surgeries.”
Last week, 55 employees of Davis School District answered the call for donations, contributing 59 units of blood. Blood drives like this have helped the Red Cross stabilize their blood supply, but the need never stops.
While 60% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, only about 10% do. If you’re able, consider giving a gift that could potentially save someone’s life.

Meet our next #SaturdaySidekick—Lilly, the fabulous Havanese of the Hughes Family.
Lilly has been a cherished member of the family for 16 years. She is living her best senior life with a mix of relaxation and playful antics. While she’s known for her love of cozy naps and tasty treats, Lilly still brings the spunk by darting around the house like a whirlwind from time to time. Her favorite pastimes include tearing up cardboard into tiny pieces and transporting her beloved lamb chop toys from room to room.
The Hughes Family is grateful to be part of the Davis School District community. Katelyn, Landon, Lisa and Scott all contribute their unique talents to different schools throughout the district, and Lilly brings a touch of joy to all our lives.
We’re thrilled to celebrate Lilly as our #SaturdaySidekick! Share your own special sidekicks with us by messaging, tagging or emailing us.

Meet our next #SaturdaySidekick—Miss Quillamina Pricklepants, aka Mina!
Mina is a nocturnal hedgehog who absolutely thrives under the moonlight, racing on her wheel and exploring parks with her human, School Psychologist Janie Maxfield. When she's not out and about at football, baseball or soccer games, Mina is indulging in her favorite treats—live mealworms, waxworms and crickets. Her top hobbies include cozying up in her cuddle sack and getting those cherished belly rubs.
Occasionally, Mina makes a special appearance at school, delighting students who’ve earned a unique opportunity to meet her.
We’re excited to celebrate Mina as our #SaturdaySidekick! Share your own special sidekicks with us by messaging, tagging or emailing.

Davis County contractors will be working on the Denver & Rio Grande Western Rail Trail (also known as the Rail Trail and DRG Trail) between the dates of Aug. 22 and Aug. 30.
There will be temporary one-day closures that may affect students' routes to school.
Signs and barricades will be installed to alert everyone when the trail is closed and then will be removed to notify everyone when the trail has reopened. The closed sections will reopen within 24 hours of completing work.
It is important for the safety of students and for the integrity of the surface coating being applied that no one enters the trail during the closures. Heavy equipment will be in use and the materials being applied will ruin new shoes and clothes as well as bikes, scooters and strollers.
The sealcoating process requires 24 hours to cure, and the sections of trail will be reopened the morning after the work is complete. For example, students at Farmington High and Canyon Creek Elementary experienced the closure on Thursday Aug. 22 until Friday morning Aug. 23.
Weather permitting, the contractors will be following the schedule below for the trail closures:
Day 1 – Thursday, August 22 – Centerville/Farmington
• Farmington High
• Canyon Creek Elementary
Day 2 – Monday, August 26 - Farmington/Kaysville
• Endeavour Elementary
• Snow Horse Elementary
• Centennial Junior High
Day 3 – Wednesday, August 28 - Layton
• Ellison Park Elementary
Day 4 – Thursday, August 29 - Clearfield
• Holt Elementary
Day 5 – Friday, August 30 - Clearfield/Clinton
• Clinton Elementary
