Katy Wilson has spent more than two decades helping students discover the wonder of science, but her impact extends far beyond the classroom.
The Millcreek Junior High School educator was recently named Utah Middle School Science Teacher of the Year, a prestigious recognition that celebrates excellence in science education and honors teachers who inspire students through innovative instruction, dedication and a passion for learning.
For Wilson, the award reflects a career devoted to engaging students, fostering curiosity and creating meaningful learning experiences that prepare young people for future success.
"It is a tremendous honor," Wilson said. "I love what I do, and I love working with junior high students."
Wilson is uniquely qualified to understand the educational journey of Davis School District students because she once sat in their seats herself. A graduate of Viewmont High School, Wilson earned her degree in biological science secondary education from Utah State University before beginning a teaching career that has spanned a variety of grade levels and subjects.
She is currently in her 11th year at Millcreek Junior High and previously taught at South Davis and Central Davis junior highs as well as Alta High School. Throughout her career, she has taught science courses ranging from seventh-grade science to high school biology and currently teaches ninth-grade Earth science along with one section of seventh-grade science.
What sets Wilson apart is her commitment to helping students take ownership of their learning. Her approach emphasizes personalized learning opportunities that allow students to engage deeply with scientific concepts while building critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
That approach has been especially successful in her ninth-grade Earth science classes.
"The personalized learning work I've been doing lately has really taken off," Wilson said. "Especially in my ninth-grade classes, they love it."
Colleagues and students alike recognize Wilson's ability to make science relevant, engaging and accessible. Her classroom is built around inquiry, exploration and the belief that every student is capable of learning and growing.
While science is her primary focus, Wilson's passion for education reaches beyond a single subject. During her time at Millcreek, she also taught an Enriched Reading course where students explored both fiction and nonfiction texts through book clubs, read-alouds and lessons built around student interests. Her master's degree in reading instruction further reflects her dedication to supporting student learning across disciplines.
Wilson credits much of her success to her love of working with adolescents, a group she believes is often misunderstood.
Although she initially planned to teach high school, Wilson discovered early in her career that junior high students offered a unique opportunity to inspire learners during a critical stage of development.
"I just love junior high," she said. "Seventh graders are curious and open to learning, and ninth graders are beginning to focus on what they want to do in the future. They have those basic school skills, so we can really focus on the content, science skills and deeper learning."
That ability to connect with students at different stages of their academic journey is one reason Wilson is so highly regarded by her peers.
Her recognition as Utah's Middle School Science Teacher of the Year highlights not only her individual accomplishments but also the caliber of educators found throughout Davis School District. Through innovative instruction, a student-centered approach and a commitment to helping every learner succeed, Wilson exemplifies the district's mission of preparing students for lifelong learning and achievement.
For the thousands of students who have walked through her classroom doors over the years, Wilson's influence is measured not by awards alone, but by the curiosity, confidence and love of learning she helps cultivate every day.
