Routes to Teaching in Davis

There are two paths in obtaining a Professional Educator License in Utah. The first option is to go through a University Program that ends in licensure. The second option is to go through a District's APPEL (Alternative Pathway to Professional Educator License) program.

APPEL is the state's alternative licensure program, and each district has set their own path for how candidates can obtain a teaching license through their APPEL Programs.

If you would like to teach Special Education, the state still runs the APPEL-Sped program. Here is a link for more information on obtaining a Special Education Professional License.

The Davis APPEL Program is designed to support unlicensed general ed. teachers in the Davis School District. Therefore, the first step towards being placed into our APPEL Program is to obtain a teaching position in Davis. Please note that paraprofessionals, teacher aides, prep teachers, and substitute teachers are not qualifying positions for APPEL. Our available teaching positions can be found on the DSD Careers website. Once you hold a bachelor's degree, you are welcome to apply for any positions you would like to teach. You do not need to hold a teaching license prior to applying.

Once a candidate has a teaching position, the next step is to obtain an Associate Educator License (AEL).  An Associate License is a temporary license (good for up to 3 years while you work toward the Professional). You need an AEL and a teaching position before we can add you to the APPEL program. You can get the AEL before you are hired or after. Earning an AEL may give you an edge in obtaining a teaching position.  Remember, you do not need to have an AEL to apply for a teaching position at this time.

Here is the application for the Elementary AEL (obtained through the State).

Here is the application for the Secondary AEL (obtained through the State).

Part of earning a Secondary Professional License is to earn a Professional endorsement. During the AEL process, you will earn a portion of an endorsement (Associate endorsement).

Here is the list of endorsements.
