Creative movement is a fantastic way of learning body awareness through expression in an artistic medium, and during the month of September, Foxboro had a special visitor to teach students this important skill.
Tami Knubel, a dance specialist for Repertory Dance Theatre’s Arts-in-Education program, worked with K, 1st, 2nd and 6th grade classes for three class periods, demonstrating ways that dance can both be an expressive medium and a tool for integrating many content areas in education.
The classes happened during their weekly drama classes and Foxboro's Drama teacher, Pieter Lingen said that having Mrs. Tami was a "great way to start the year."
"Having someone like Mrs. Tami here as an artist-in-residence was a great way to start the year! She taught the students so much about movement, shapes and integrated that into the science, social studies and language arts curriculum."
Dances were choreographed by students with Mrs. Tami, who took into account the individual learning goals of each of the participating classes. Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Ari said that watching her students learn things like shapes, counting and storytelling through creative movement was a great way to reinforce those things learned in the classroom, adding that it was "a highlight of their week."
Mrs. Tami said that she loved her time at Foxboro.
"Working with the students at Foxboro Elementary was truly a delight each day I was there! The students were open to trusting in their own creativity as we explored movement and imagination, linking these ideas to classroom and daily learning. They are fortunate to have time to further their arts education with Mr. Lingen each week. These students are bright and talented children. It was a joy to spend this time at Foxboro!"
Foxboro staff and students thank Mrs. Tami and Repertory Dance Theatre for bringing this program to our school!
