This past week, Utah legislators visited schools across the Davis School District for Legislator Day in the Classroom. This initiative allowed students and educators to connect with their state representatives, showcasing the amazing work happening in our classrooms.
From writing sensory poems to playing fraction war and exploring the principles of matter, our legislators got hands-on experience with engaging activities. One school even had its choir perform, bringing a touch of creativity to the day.
These visits weren't just about fun; they also provided a platform for teachers and staff to discuss challenges and celebrate student successes. Stronger connections between state government and local education help ensure that policy decisions reflect the needs of our schools.

Farmington High designers received advice from an award-winning professional.
Greg Newbold sold his first piece of art when he was in eight grade. Years later, he has collaborated with Simon & Schuster, Random House, Heinz Foods and the list goes on.
Greg’s friend and fellow artist, Mike Call, teaches a commercial art class at Farmington High. Mike invited his colleague to come and share what it takes to become a professional artist. Newbold discussed his journey, experience, and creative process with the students. The young artists heard firsthand how a passion for art can evolve into a fulfilling career.
"Why do something you don't love when you can pursue something that brings you joy?" Newbold said. "There are probably other things that would make me more money, but nothing else would give me as much joy."
Newbold encouraged the students to stick with their passions, even when the road gets tough, and reminded them that each artist’s unique style is their strength. "So why try to be a copy when you can be the best version of yourself?" he asked.
The students asked insightful questions and absorbed his wisdom. Newbold even touched on the current debate surrounding AI art.
"AI removes the actual human creative process from the result," Newbold said. "It basically takes existing imagery, runs it through a meat grinder, and spits it back out in a form that might be appealing to some—until you look closely. There's no satisfaction because there's no soul. There's no real human interaction with the artwork. And that's what makes art: the human component."
We look forward to seeing what the next generation of artists creates. But even if you're not the best, it doesn’t matter—the simple act of doodling is still art. Try it.
